01 Higher reliability：As the installation of lamps and lanterns in addition to the conventional ground, there is no shortage of installation in buildings hundreds of meters high, under the sparkling water, wet seaside, the cost of replacement and maintenance of lamps and lanterns after damage is very high, so the reliability requirements are extremely high.
02 Smaller package: smaller package will have more accurate optical performance, architectural lighting with the development of the industry, the design of lighting more specialized, “see light without light, anti-glare, ultra-small lamps and lanterns” demand is common, LED will also be more compact, the more compact.
03 More color integration: As the demand for architectural lighting scene illumination increases, single-color scenes can no longer meet the demand for scene change, especially in the field of landscape illumination of buildings, two-color, three-color RGB, four-color RGBW and other multi-color LED products are increasingly favored by luminaire manufacturers.
As the performance requirements of LED products improve, especially the input power and luminous intensity of a single package device are increasing at the same time, the heat-resistant performance of the material is also increasingly demanding. However, the early PA6T, PA9T and PCT support plastic materials can no longer meet the high quality requirements of LED products, so the support materials of LED products must be innovated. Under this premise and background, EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) is logically logged into the historical stage of efficient LED application as LED bracket plastic sealing material. The performance is more stable under high temperature. At the same time, EMC bracket combines with copper material with thermal conductivity up to 137W/m.K. The thermal resistance of LED is lower, and the power of single lamp can reach 3W or even higher under high current drive, which well meets the market demand of “brighter and more efficient” in high temperature environment at this stage.
The epoxy resin material of EMC products is stable under high humidity, while PCT/PPA bracket is a thermoplastic material, which itself has a certain moisture absorption effect, so its moisture resistance is poor. For architectural lighting, most of what LED products have to face are high temperature and high humidity scenarios. In this harsh environment, EMC products can work steadily with ease, while PCT/PPA products will be more difficult to perform.
At the same time, we should also note that LED products used outdoors will inevitably be exposed to the sun’s rays, and the UV light contained in sunlight has a greater degradation effect on plastic products, in the long UV light exposure, PCT / PPA products will yellowing, brittle, product reliability decreases faster. Under the same condition, EMC products have better UV resistance and longer service life because of the epoxy resin used.
In addition to the above differences, EMC can be very small because it is a thermoset product, as its holder pins can be very small, so that it will not occupy too much limited PCB space. PCT/PPA is the opposite, because the conductive pins extend out of the holder body, so it needs to occupy a certain position to line up the LEDs, so there is the risk of pin deformation, but also on the layout of the PCB has a certain impact.
